Well contribution of Oracle Students’ Library


Oracle Students’ Library in Halokhana union of Kurigram Sadar

The Oracle Students’ Library in Araji Palashbari village of Halokhana union under Sadar upazila of Kurigram district has been well contributing to make an ideal society for some years.
The students involved with the library are conducting various social activities beside their studies. The activities are: collecting books for library, removing dropout students, free coaching for local students, exercising computer skills, tree plantation and resisting early marriage.
Local eight students led by student Mojahedul Islam, who is now a Senior Officer of Sonali Bank Ltd, set up a library ‘Oracle Students’ Library’ with some books in Mojahedul’s house in 2000. Then there were no ten people like SSC passed men in the village Araji Palashbari. To make more educated, the students conducted reading and free coaching for school students through the library. Student Jangir Alom, who is a now Warrant Officer of Bangladesh Army, played a main role for organising local students.
While number of students of the library was increased, they constructed a two-stored tin-shad house beside Tapurchar Government Primary School at Araji Palashbari village in October, 2008. To create a good atmosphere of reading, they have made a garden around the library.
There are over 400 books of various types including study books, story books, books on computer, books on general knowledge, books on freedom fighting and biography of noble men. The books were collected from ex-students and locals. The ex-students have been providing four journals including the daily Prothan Alo and the daily Ittefaque for over six years. Now over 120 students (including 55 girl students) are involved with the library.
The library is kept open at 6:00 am to 8:00 pm everyday where 60-80 students study there. Now local students are taught in two shifts 6:00 am to 8:00 am and 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm everyday where ten senior students (including four girl students) teach them without interest.
To make beautifying naturally to Halokhana union, the students planted over two thousand plants of Krisnachura tree in all wards of Halokhana union from 2008, but there are about 450 alive of the planted.  
Shahida Akhtar, a reader of the library and BA (honours) student of Kurigram Government College, said, “We are facing shortage chairs, tables, book-shelves, books and accommodation of the library being increased readers. We (girl students) have no scope of studying in the government public library of Kurigram town. At least 15 girl students of Araji Palashbari, Tapurchar, Subharkuthi and Char Subharkuthi villages of the union study in the library. We need of help with books and furniture for the library.”
“An Australia-emigrant (Bangladeshi) Anwarul Islam Bakshi donated two computer sets in the library in October, 2013 while he visited the library activities. The students take training on basic skills of computer through Halokhana Union Digital Centre accordingly and exercise skills group-wise at 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm every day,” said Jahangir Alom, General Secretary of the library.
“Halokana union is a poor area in Kurigram district. We have been conducting the library activities through voluntary service. Our main aim is: establishing Halokhana as an ideal and educated union. We expect, may establish many libraries like Oracle Students’ Library in rural areas of the country,” said Saiful Islam, President of the library.  
“We need more books and furniture, but we do not receive money directly from donors for library activities. Besides, we need agriculture-based books and journals as some locals come in the library to read newspapers and books every day,” said Saiful.
