The day-long traditional annual Astami Snan and a religious
bathing festival of Hindu community held at Ramna Ghat Point of Brahmaputra
River at Chilmari upazila of the district on Thursday (April 19) from early in
the morning with due respect and solemnity.
The Snan (bath) was started at the early hour on Saturday, but the main snan
was held at 4:45 am and closed it at 9:45 am on the day.
More than two lakhs of Hindu devotees
including male, female and children from many parts of the country and India
arrived here by buses, trucks, private car, rickshaw and mechanized boats.

committee Rabindra Nath Sarker told that they took holy bath in the Brahmaputra
River in commemoration of saint Parshurum. Parshurum had bath on this day of
Lunar month in the river Bramaputra and freed himself from sin as he killed his
mother Renuka Debi and his four brothers by an axe at the order of his father
Jamadagni, according to the Hindu belief.
The day long mela (large festival) was
also arranged in this connection. The mela is being held in Chilmari Ghat to
Jolgachh Ghat 3-km area of the bank of the river Brahmaputra.
Many stalls were set up with attractive
articles including flute, earth made things, portraits of goddess, tiger, mango
etc. Bioscope and circus were also arranged there. Some thousands
of people from of all walks of live gathered there to buy some items for their
dear and near ones. Various kinds of toy and household items were also sold in
the mela.
A good number of police, Ansar, and RAB
deployed to maintain law and order situation during festival. An executive
Magistrate was also deployed by the local administration.
Chilmari UNO Md. Mamun-Ul-Hasan told that
a good number of tube wells were set up for pure drinking water for the
devotees; more than 200 tents were set up for changing the clothes of women.
Security measures were tightened likes previous years by local administration.
