An 82-foot-long bamboo bridge over the Chhinaye Bill (marshland) has been constructed by 22 people of three villages of Chhinaye union under Rajarhat upazila of the district to mitigate sufferings of 12 villagers of three unions.
The recent flood collapsed the bridge at Chhinaye Bazar village of the union on Chhinaye Gate to Akota Bazar road at August13. As a result, over 15 thousand people of 12 villages of three unions were facing the untold suffering in communication for coming the upazila and the district headquarters.
To mitigate their sufferings, 22 people of Chhinaye Haat, Joy Kumar and Chatura villages near the bridge took an initiative of constructing a bamboo bridge over the collapsed part. The bridge has been constructed with leadership of local youth Sadequl Haque Nuru who is a former chairman of Chhinaye union parishad.
Chhinaye Haat villager Abul Kalam Azad, 35, one of 22 people of the bridge construction, said, “At the first week of September after partially receding floodwater, we some youths of the villages planned of constructing a bamboo bridge over the collapsed part and collected some bamboos too. But we feel our well leadership to collect more bamboos and money. Then we consented to the ex-chairman Sadequl Haque Nuru to work with us as the co-ordinator.”
“Construction of the bridge and bamboo collection was begum in full swims from September 8 while the 22 people were selected as volunteer-members through a discussion. They collected over 500 bamboos and cash from locals. Some of people assisted providing foods to the construction labourers,” Abul Kalam said.
Sadequl Haque Nuru said, “I counted -- reconstruction of the bridge will not be enabled within one year if the government wants it in upcoming fiscal year. Therefore, I have been involved with the construction on request of local people. Before collapsing the bridge, over 15 thousand people including over 500 students of Chhinaye union under Rajarhat upazila, Barovita union under Phulbari upazila and Barobari union under Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila would use the road and bridge. After collapsing it, the people were mostly suffering communication problems.”
“To construct the 82-foot-long and nine-foot-wide bamboo bridge; Taka 40 thousand for nylon thread, iron wire and colour and Taka 30 thousand for labourer payment were expended while the bridge was completed within 22 days. We included labourers in the construction work as the volunteers are not expert,” Sadequl said.
The bridge user Samiul Haque, 65, resident of Baroloye village of Barovita union under Phulbari upazila, said during crossing the bamboo bridge, “Some villagers of Barovita union use the road for going to Kurigram headquarters and Barobari haat (market). We faced communication problems due to be collapsed the bridge in the recent flood. I am happy for this well initiative.”
An auto-rickshaw driver Rashedul Islam, 23, said while he was crossing the bridge taking his passengers, “After collapsing the bridge, I could not run my vehicle on the route and faced economical problems. Now I am happy for running my vehicle again.”

“I gathered knowledge -- cordial assistant of locals, mentality of inspiration and voluntary service of the activists should have. One of them, who will co-ordinate the work, should keep mentality of expending self-money in needs. I think this kind of bridge may be constructed in other collapsed parts before reconstructing bridge by the government,” Sadequl said.
