‘Radio Chilmari 99.2 FM’ is keeping well contribution to create awareness in
socio-economic development at Chilmari, Rajibpur, Roumari and Ulipur upazilas
of Kurigram district.
For its well contributions in Kurigram
society, the Radio Chilmari received various national and international awards.
The Brahmaputra river basin areas
Chilmari, Roumari and Rajibpur upazila of the district is the backward places
than others areas. Considering the backwardness, RDRS Bangladesh (NGO) set up
Radio Chilmari 99.2 FM at Mistripara village of Raniganj union under the
Chilmari upazila and started its broadcasting on test from November 3, 2011.
And its broadcasting was begun with various programmes on June 2, 2012 taking
proper approval by the Ministry of Information.
The radio authority has been broadcasting
various events on seven subjects, which are health, education, agriculture,
disaster, information, entertainment and news. Normally they broadcast 22 kinds
of contains in a week.
Of them, phone-in-programme under health
and agriculture, magazine, radio carton, drama, talk-show, documentary report
and life-work are popular to its audiences.
The ‘Nareer Katha’ programme for women is
the most popular which is broadcasted at 4:35 pm on Saturday. The programme
includes women’s rights, empowerment, violence, torture, dowry, divorce, rape,
acid throwing and story of success women.
The radio broadcasts two types of
programme: one indoor and another outdoor. Now the radio is being broadcasted
in areas of radius 25 kilometre taking frequency power 250 watts.
The Radio Chilmari received Girl Power
Award by Plan International Bangladesh and BNNRC (Bangladesh NGOs’ Network for
Radio and Communication) jointly in 2014, Meena Media Award by UNESCO in 2015
and 2016, Anti-tobacco Award by EC Bangladesh in 2016, Asia Pacific Award
(international) by Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union in 2016, Family Planning
Award by the Ministry of Health and Family Planning Welfare in 2016 and 2017
and PIB A-2-I Media Award by Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) in 2017.
Themes of the awarded contains were: a
drama on death of girl-mother during her delivery period, a drama on
anti-tobacco, a documentary on education of Harizan (sweeper) community
children, a documentary on study of a disabled girl, a documentary on Digital
Bangladesh (union digital centre activity), a story on effect of child marriage
and a magazine programme on family planning system.
The radio authority is producing skilled
manpower on the radio activities. Some of them have jointed with various radio
stations taking experience from Radio Chilmari.
Lutfunnahar Happy, a Radio Joky of Radio
Chilmari and Degree first year student of Chilmari Women’s College, said, “I
have been working with the radio station in its various activities including
Radio Joky for five years. I have understood that it is possible to build-up
well carrier from the community radio. Next, I shall try to enter upper
position anywhere after completing my degree course.”
“Radio Chilmari 99.2 FM has been keeping
well contribution in socio-economic development in Kurigram for five years.
People are being awaked giving information and entertainment through
broadcasting various events including drama, documentary, magazine, talk-show
and news. And we include new programmes on demand and interest of our
audiences,” the radio station-in-charge Bashir Ahmad said.
“We have newly added the
phone-in-programme (agriculture) in our radio programmes on the request of an
audience Raton Mia, 30, of Mistripara area of Chilmari upazila. From the radio
station, an agriculture officer gives solution on farmers’ asking through
telephone or mobile phone or facebook,” Bashir Ahmad said.
“Besides, we (radio authority) are working
to build up skill manpower to mitigate unemployment. At first we select the
interested educated youths as volunteer (internee) for working with Radio
Chilmari and train up them on pronunciation, preparing (writing) scripts,
planning programme, directing, recording and producing programmes (functions)
accordingly,” Bashir said.
“Now 22 volunteers are working with us.
One Krisna Kamal Chandra, who was a trained volunteer activist of Radio
Chilmari, jointed recently as a staff with a radio station in Dhaka,” Bashir
said.
Shariful Islam Khan, Member-Secretary of
Radio Chilmari managing committee and Programme Co-ordinator of RDRS Bangladesh
in Kurigram, said, “Last year (2016) we upgraded radio frequency 250 watt from
100 watt due to demand of audiences, who can receive our broadcasting
programmes in area of radius 25 km from the radio station. Now there is no
scope of upgrading its frequency over 250 watts for the community radio as the
government policy. We shall try to upgrading frequency, if the government gives
scope.”
