Hatia Smreeti Shaudha (martyrs’ memorial) near Anantapur
Bazar in Hatia union under Ulipur upazila |
On the 13th November’71, a largest mass killing took
place in Hatia union (under Sector No. 11 during the liberation war) under
Ulipur upazila of the district.
Local people observe the day
every year with deep respect and befitting manner.
We are demanding for
observing the day officially and to mention martyrs’ names in Hatia Smreeti
Shaudha (martyrs’ memorial), freedom fighter Babar Ali said.
Local agents (Rajakar,
Albadar and Al-Shams) of
Pakistani army introduced the freedom fighters’ shelters in seven villages of
the union, where freedom fighters set up camps.
On their information,
Pakistani invaders attacked the seven villages just after people had gone to
bed taking Shehri
(pre-Fazr meal) of Ramadan
month (on November 13) and shot dead 697 innocent people including
children.
To remember martyrs, a Smreeti Shaudha had been constructed in Dagar Kuthi
village of the union, but it went away in Brahmaputra River due to erosion in
1998.
Later a new memorial, funded
by Kurigram Zila Parishad, has been constructed near Natun Anantapur Bazar in
Hatia union.
To mark the day this year, Ulipur upazila freedom fighters’ unit and Hatia
union parishad jointly took daylong programme included flags hosting, rally,
Meelad mahfeel and discussion meeting.
Through the meeting,
martyrs’ relatives demanded for mentioning the martyrs’ names in a separate
plat near the Smreeti Shaudha, punishment of war criminals, rehabilitation to
martyrs’ families and saving Hatia union from erosion by the Brahmaputra River,
chairman Abul Hossen said.
A
freedom fighter Mijanur Rahman said, “Some people, who were involved with the
massacre, are in living still here. Witnesses will be got still here if they
are brought under the tribunal.”
Commander of the district muktijodya sangshad command Shirajul Islam Tuku said,
“There were some massacre incidents in the district. If the people, who were
involved with the massacres, are given punishments through the tribunal, new
generation will learn about their characters.”
