A memorial of front fighting in the liberation war’71 was
constructed near Balabari Railway Station in Shikarpara village of Thanahat
union under Chilmari upazila of Kurigram district in 2012.
There was a camp of Pakistani army in
Balabari Railway Station. Pakistani army would conduct the war of Ulipur and
Chilmari upazilas in Kurigram. Pakistani army with the help of Razakar and
Al-badar would kill the innocent people.
The Pak army would bring catching some
people into the camp. Then they would kill them through torturing and would
dump the body in shallow ditch near the station area.
“On October 17, 1971, a heavy front
fighting was occurred between freedom fighters and Pak army near Balabari
Railway Station. Around 20 Pak army were killed in the Balabari fighting while
three freedom fighters received martyrdom,” said the freedom fighter Shawkat
Ali Sarkar Bir Bikrim, Chairman of Chilmari upazila parishad.
Pak army were defeated in the Balabari war
while No.11 Sector Commander Colonel Taher led the freedom fighters.
Kurigram people works
department (PWD) constructed the memorial with the cost of around Taka 28 lakh
near Balabari Railway Station in 2012, the official sources said.
Local Manjurul Islam, 63, of Shikarpara
village under Chilmari upazila said, “Pakistani army would bring the innocent
people from different areas during the liberation war and dump the bodies in
ditches near Balabari Railway Station after killing them.”
“Around 50 bodies were dumped inside the
memorial area. Besides, the army dumped huge numbers of bodies in different
ditches near the railway station,” said Manjurul.
